Bio
Name: Étienne Champlain aka Freeman, The Smiling Man
Age: 22
Personality:
• Two-Faced
• Cunning
• Bloodthirsty
• Intuitive
• Cheerful
• Immoral
A serial killer who believes strongly in morality but also that he cannot live up to them- he considers himself evil and subconsciously wishes to be punished for his deeds even as he commits more, though he refuses to fight his nature.
Above all else, he values his freedom.
World History:
Humans share the fantastic world of magic, Terra, with monsters they have warred against since time immemorial. Time and again, the monsters would gain a Demon King who would threaten the human race- but each time a legendary hero would emerge, chosen by the almighty Hero Medal! Humans progressed, science and technology marching on hand in hand. Such was the cycle of history...
Until the hero Folio failed.
The ensuing battle between the entire human species and the races of monsters devastated the world, Terra now only ruins. The battle long over, humans and monsters struggle to survive in their hopeless world.
One such human, Rex Arany, is a fledgeling wizard warrior. A 'treasure hunter' (i.e scavenger) taken on a team to the deep catacombs of a ruined castle, they clash with a rival group of monsters and are wiped out. Aside from Rex, who in what he thought were to be his final moments, grasps the Hero Medal from the wreckage and to his surprise is chosen to be his era's hero of destiny!
What he's meant to do and why him, he has no idea. It's really just made life more of a hassle.
Étienne Champlain, the boy that would become Freeman, was born with astounding strength and talent- he was able to imitate almost anything he saw someone else do. But this strength was not his own. He was born a slave and the day he was able to walk was also the day his legs were chained. When his strength became evident, a new and more valuable use for him was devised. He would be his owner's assassin. To prevent him from simply escaping when sent out his family was held hostage. Each mission only made him grow stronger. His family eventually felt they would never escape their shackles but they could save their son- by committing suicide in the hopes Étienne would be able to live freely.
He chose then to fulfil their wish and do as he wished- by slaughtering not only his ex-master and his men, but all the other slaves. He was completely free of all shackles, with no one knowing his identity or history. He sought out strong people to battle, adding their skills to his own. In his mind, he was just pursuing what he enjoyed. In his heart, he was attempting suicide. Each time he fought a foe, he would give them a different sob story as to why he was this way- trying to find a set of circumstances that would justify his existence.
Rex first met Freeman when acting as a mercenary, hunting down the serial killer 'The Smiling Man.' Freeman managed to turn around the trap intended to draw him in and caught Rex unawares. The two battled nearly to the death but Freeman lost. Rex was possessed of the same battle mania as he and Freeman truly felt he was finally going to die, as no one like that could not kill when their blood was flowing.
Rex let him live. This produced a 'chain' that has become an obsession with the freedom-loving madman- neither love, nor hate, nor anything a sane person could understand. Was it possible to be the sort of born maniac he was and yet live a life worth living? The delight of murder lessened with the black mark on his record. He first began to chase Rex in the hopes of killing him and setting himself free. He soon began getting caught up his adventures.
Appearance:
A well built young man with hair down to his waist, Freeman is often noted to be extremely attractive, especially for his gentle smile.
When he lets loose his wild side, his face often contorts into features as disgusting as his heart.
Abilities:
Freeman was born with unusually strong, flexible muscles and joints, able to rotate almost all his joints 360° (where not blocked by contact with other body parts). These traits lend themselves well to imitating other people's techniques, as he can overcome physique limitations. As he learns Human Power, the ability to transform willpower and spiritual strength into energy, not only does his physical strength increase but so does his flexibility. He can use the energy to rotate his body parts like drills and extend his limbs.
His ability to imitate is uncanny. Most simple techniques, be those hand-to-hand or weapon based, he can copy after witnessing once and more complicated ones by having them performed on him. He will often only understand how to perform a technique and not the reasons it's effective- as a result, he rarely develops on the skills and simply adds them to his collection to be pulled out where needed.
He does have a set of unique skills, which revolve around rotating his joints and unleashing the motion on his opponent's bodies, either to rip chunks of them off ("Death Roll") or to transfer the rotation to their bodies and twist them up ("Death Whip"). He often develops new moves based on the fly.
Other notes:
Though his world has minimal direct geographical equivalents, he's from a roughly western European region. Probably the closest parallel would be France.
His animal theme is a crocodile- he often has a fake smile and unleashes fake tears, is an ambush predator and in a terrible pun is an imitation crocodile.
